The ‘Human Edit’: How Smart Professionals Simplify Their English

Let’s be brutally honest for a moment: most business communication sounds like it was written by a committee of nervous robots.
You’ve seen it. You’ve probably even written it:
“Our highly experienced consultants leverage tailored, cutting-edge solutions to foster synergy and drive measurable outcomes.”
What does that even mean?
We live in an age where clarity is currency. The clearer you sound, the more confident and credible you appear. The more confident you appear, the more people respect you.
In professional conversations — whether spoken or written — clarity is not just about grammar or vocabulary. It’s about stripping away the fluff that makes you sound insecure, trying too hard, or disconnected from real people.
Let’s break it down with a real example so you can simplify your English.
Here’s a typical sentence you might find on a company website:
“The staff at XYZ Media have been consulting successfully and fostering measurable, tailored solutions for their clients for years. The company’s highly experienced media consultants understand and appreciate their clients’ requirements to launch and implement cost-effective, cutting-edge solutions strategically and systematically. Their sensitivity to the client’s objectives and profound expertise in marketing strategy and social media bring added value and synergy to any project they embark upon.”
Technically, there’s nothing “wrong” with this. But it’s heavy, impersonal, and stuffed with empty buzzwords. Words like synergy, strategically, systematically, added value — they fill space but deliver no meaning.
How do we fix it?
We rewrite it like we’re talking to a real person. For example:
We’ve been helping our clients grow their businesses through advertising and social media for years. Our experienced team understands your need to boost profits and build your brand using smart, cost-effective strategies. Our marketing and social media expertise helps you achieve your goals — clearly and efficiently.
Notice the difference? The second version is:
Direct
Personal
Specific
Human
This is how confident professionals speak and write. They don’t hide behind vague, complicated phrases. They say exactly what they mean.
Four Simple Rules for Clear, Confident Communication
1️⃣ Cut the Fluff: If a word doesn’t add real meaning, cut it. Phrases like added value, fostering synergy, or profound expertise sound impressive but mean very little.
2️⃣ Use Personal Language: Use we, our, you, and your wherever possible. This brings you closer to your audience and makes your message feel like a conversation, not a sales pitch.
3️⃣ Be Specific: Don’t say “measurable solutions” — say “increase profits” or “grow your brand”. Concrete language builds trust and credibility.
4️⃣ Speak Like a Human — Not a Corporate Policy Document: Imagine you’re explaining your offer to a client sitting across the table. Would you say: “We leverage tailored solutions to foster outcomes”? Of course not.
You’d say: “We help you get results.”
The Core Principle: Clarity Signals Confidence
The more clearly you speak, the more people assume you know what you’re doing. Simple, direct language projects competence. Overcomplicated, jargon-filled language often signals the opposite: fear, insecurity, or a desperate need to sound impressive.
Respect Starts With Simplicity
One final thought: clear communication isn’t just about you. It’s about showing respect for your listener. When you make your message easy to understand, you respect their time and attention.
In today’s fast-moving professional world, that kind of respect earns you trust — and trust earns you opportunities.
ACTION STEP: Next time you write a business email, proposal, or LinkedIn post, do one final “human edit.” Ask yourself: Would I say this exact sentence to a client over coffee? If not, rewrite it.
