What is the Email Writing for Lawyers Audiobook About?

Email is one of the most important forms of communication in legal practice. Lawyers use it to communicate with clients, colleagues, opposing counsel, courts, and other professionals every day.

Email Writing for Lawyers is a practical audiobook designed to help legal professionals communicate more effectively by email.

The audiobook covers the principles and techniques that matter most when writing professional legal emails, including clarity, structure, tone, concision, and professional judgment.

It is particularly useful for lawyers, paralegals, law students, and other legal professionals who use English as a second language or simply want to improve the quality of their professional writing.

Organizing Ideas in Legal Emails: How should I structure a legal email so the reader can quickly understand what I need?

Don’t write the email in the order you thought of it.

Write it in the order the reader needs it.

Legal emails often contain several layers of information: background, analysis, questions, requests, and deadlines.

The temptation is to include everything and let the reader work out what matters.

A better approach is to lead with the point, provide the necessary context, and finish with a clear next step.

Your job is to help the reader know what to do.

The One-Job Rule: How do I make sure my legal email has a clear purpose?

Every email should have a job.

Before you start writing, decide what the email needs to achieve: get a document, confirm a decision, explain a position, arrange a meeting, or ask for action. If the reader cannot tell what the email is trying to achieve, the problem is usually not the reader—it is the writer.

A useful question is: “What do I want the recipient to do after reading this?”

If you cannot answer that in one sentence, your email probably needs a clearer purpose.

The Signpost Rule: As a lawyer, how do I organize an email when I need to cover several points?

Although it is often good advice to give each email one clear purpose, legal emails frequently need to cover several points. That's fine—as long as you give the reader a map.

In reality, legal emails often need to do more than one thing: update a client, ask for documents, confirm a deadline, and flag an issue. You don't necessarily need four separate emails.

Instead, make the different objectives visible. Lead with the main purpose, then use short paragraphs or headings to separate the other points, and finish by making the required actions and deadlines clear.

The rule is simple: if an email has several jobs, signpost them.

For example:

Subject: Smith matter — documents, hearing date, and next steps

Dear Sarah,

I am writing to update you on three points concerning the Smith matter.

Documents: Please send us the signed witness statement by Friday.

Hearing: The court has confirmed the hearing for 14 November. You do not need to attend.

Next steps: Once we receive the witness statement, we will finalize the bundle and send you a copy for your records.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,

James

Notice that the email has several objectives, but the reader does not have to search for them. They have clear labels.
