International Legal English Course

The program helps participants:

• use legal terminology accurately and naturally;
• draft clearer legal and commercial correspondence;
• explain legal risks and concepts to non-lawyers;
• discuss contractual wording and obligations;
• state positions, ask precise questions and clarify meaning in meetings;
• handle disagreement and negotiation professionally;
• adapt tone, formality and directness for international clients and colleagues;
• improve pronunciation and spoken clarity where required.

Specific objectives are agreed during the initial assessment.

Legal terminology

Specialist vocabulary, legal collocations, commonly confused terms and appropriate use in professional contexts.

Legal writing and correspondence

Emails, client communication, legal explanations, document structure, tone, clarity and common grammar problems in legal writing.

Contract language

Rights and obligations, conditions, warranties, liability, remedies, definitions, interpretation and discussion of proposed wording.

Meetings and negotiation

Clarification, questioning, qualification, disagreement, concessions, summarizing positions and confirming next steps.

Client communication

Explaining legal risks, presenting available options, qualifying advice and adapting technical information for non-lawyers.

Presentations and spoken communication

Structuring legal explanations, presenting conclusions, answering questions, pronunciation, stress, pacing and intelligibility.

Intercultural communication

Adapting directness, formality, disagreement and explanation when working with international clients and colleagues.

This program provides language and communication training. It does not provide jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

Every format includes an initial level and needs assessment, 20 live sessions with a specialist Legal English trainer, access to the Macson Bell learning platform, assignments, progress feedback, digital resources, email and WhatsApp support, a final assessment and certificate.

One-to-One Program

The Executive Legal English Program is suitable for:

• practicing lawyers;
• in-house legal counsel;
• trainee lawyers;
• paralegals;
• advanced law students;
• law firms and legal departments.

The normal entry level is CEFR B2, C1 or C2.

Every participant completes an assessment before training begins. Where this program is not the appropriate starting point, Macson Bell can recommend a more suitable course.

Relevant TOLES language skills can be incorporated where appropriate.

TOLES examination and registration fees are charged separately.

Training is available:

• live online for international participants;
• face-to-face at company offices by prior arrangement.

Course dates are agreed around participant and organizational availability.

Sessions may be rescheduled with at least 24 hours’ notice.

Programs are paid in full before training begins. Payment is available by card or bank transfer.

VAT treatment depends on the customer’s country of establishment and tax status.

Businesses and self-employed professionals in Spain

Where the educational exemption applies, the program is exempt from Spanish VAT under Article 20.One.9 of Spanish VAT Law 37/1992. This is a VAT-exempt supply, not a transaction charged at 0% VAT.

Businesses established in another EU Member State

No Spanish VAT will be charged where the customer provides a valid EU VAT number.

Under the general business-to-business place-of-supply rules, the service is treated as supplied in the customer’s country of establishment. The customer is responsible for accounting for the applicable VAT under the reverse-charge mechanism.

The customer’s VAT number will be verified through VIES and shown on the invoice, together with the following statement:

Businesses established outside the European Union

Spanish VAT will not normally be charged where the business customer is established outside the European Union. Under the applicable place-of-supply rules, the service is treated as supplied in the customer’s country of establishment.
